The Lowry Team :: Vermont Elementary School Garden In Wyoming Ohio

Vermont Elementary School in Wyoming Ohio discovered that there had once, long, long ago been a garden for the school.  The staff proposed that they come full circle by creating a new garden and making it a part of the curriculum.  Students at every grade level, staff members, families and Wyoming community members worked together to create the Vermont School Garden.

Students measured plots and made plans for the garden.  They developed budgets and graphed the results.  A seed drive was held requesting donations and then lovely thank you notes were written.  In art class, the students made colorful markers for the different seeds that would be planted in the garden.   In Science, the Wyoming Elementary students learned about plants and the the benefits of the earth worm. The seeds were planted, cared for and grew.

Some of the plants were sold by Adam Beard’s 3rd grade class.  His class created the advertising and marketing for the sale.  Students prepared and packaged plants and seeds as well as labeled them accordingly.  Plants were sold at the school and the local Wyoming Farmers Market.

Vermont Elementary in the Wyoming City School District organized and hosted a Soup and Salad Night.  Dinner was made with vegetables from the school garden.  Both the plant sale and the Soup and Salad Night benefited The Empowering Children’s School, Vermont Elementary’s sister school, in Sierra Leone, Africa.

The Vermont School Garden is part of a much larger initiative called Vermont Cares. Vermont Cares is an organization that encourages community involvement and pride in helping others.  A volunteer day held at The Giving Fields,which is an affiliate of the Free Store Food Bank, is just one example of how the teachers, students and their families give back to the community.
