The Lowry Team :: Things To Do This Weekend In Butler County

Looking for things to do this weekend? This week, The Lowry Team picked 3 events taking place in Butler County Ohio starting tonight!

Thursday, October 16th Cruise-In to Bridgewater Falls. This is the last night for the classic car show this season. There is no registration fee for participating in the event. Cars should park in the lot near Mattress Firm and Party City at 3385 Princeton Road Fairfield Township. The car show runs from 5 pm – 8 pm with music provided by DJ Toad. Check out the shops and restaurants at Bridgewater Falls while you are there!

Saturday, October 18th from 1 pm – 5 pm is Pumpkin Patch in the Park. This annual event is held at Harbin Park, 1300 Hunter Road in Fairfield. Enjoy a hayride, pumpkin picking, crafts, games, face painting and more. Tickets are $7 in advance for residents and $8 for non-residents. Ticket cost the day of the event is $10. Tickets may be purchased at the Fairfield Community Arts Center or by calling Parks and Recreation at 513-867-5348.

Support the Lakota West bands on Sunday, October 19th from 11 am – 8 pm at Uno’s Pizzeria. Uno’s Pizzeria and Grill is located at 9246 Schulze Drive in West Chester. The Dough Raiser event is being held to raise money for the bands to travel to the Rose Parade. The buffet includes pizza, pasta, chicken fish, salads, and soft drinks. Live music will be performed both inside and outside of the restaurant. Also included is face painting, balloons and magicians. Cost is $7 for ages 4-10 and $15 for anyone over the age of 10.

The Lowry Team :: Play At Parky’s Farm

Parky’s Farm is a 100 acre educational farm located at 10073 Daly Road Cincinnati, Ohio 45231. While they have activities all year long, the Fall brings some extra fun events.

There are two dates left for the Parky’s Farm Pumpkin Patch. Take a hayride to the pumpkin patch where the kids can pick their own pumpkin. While at the farm, visit with the farm animals and play in Parky’s Play Barn. The Pumpkin Patch is open from 10 am – 2 pm on Friday, October 17th and Friday, October 24th. Admission is $6 for kids and $2.50 for adults. You must pre-register for this event.

Parky’s Farm in Cincinnati also hosts Halloween Nights from October 9th – October 26th. The farm is decorated with tens of thousands of sparkling lights. Families can enjoy a hayride through a ghost town, play ghostly miniature golf, and go through a fun house. Other activities include an obstacle course, inflatables and a camp fire to warm yourself by. Halloween Nights is open Thursdays through Sundays from 6- 10 pm. Cost is $7 per person. Kids under the age of 2 are free. For an additional cost, Parky’s Farm also offers pony rides, snacks, beverages and souvenirs.

The Lowry Team :: Inexpensive DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

According to the Money Section of US News & World Report, the average person spends $77 on Halloween. Store bought costumes that often cost $50 or more eat up most of the Halloween budget. Even if you are not an expert seamstress, you can make inexpensive costumes for your kids!

Many costumes can be put together by using your own clothes and then purchasing necessary accessories. When making purchases, use coupons, look for sales or go to second hand stores. Some local second hand stores are as follows:

The National Retail Federation has announced that the top five costumes this year will be princesses, animals, Spider-Man, Frozen characters and other super heroes. Rather then buy any of these costumes, make them at home! Save some of that $77 for extra Halloween candy!

To create a Princess costume, use an actual dress from the closet or one used to play dress up in. Add some tulle underneath, a tiara and a wand.

An animal costume can be made from your own clothes as well. One example is to dress in a black top and bottoms. Buy a headband with ears, make a tail, add some face paint and you have yourself a cat costume.

The Spider-Man costume is simply made by wearing tight fitting blue bottoms and a red top. Paint the Spider-Man logo on the top and purchase a mask.

Expect to see a lot of Elsa costumes on Halloween night! Create the look with a light blue or white top, a tutu and cape. Olaf can be made with a white sweatshirt and hat. Then paint or glue on buttons, nose and eyes for his face.

Make a super hero costume from long underwear or tights and a top. Paint a super hero logo on the top. Use a blanket or other article of clothing for a cape.

You do not have to spend a fortune on Halloween costumes. Take a look at what you already have in your closet and use a little creativity. Also, remember that second hand stores are a great place to look for items that you need to make the costume. Many sell actual costumes as well.

The Lowry Team has found some great ideas for you to do this weekend! Many local parks and farms are having seasonal, family friendly events. Here are a few:

Saturday, October 11th is The Great Pumpkin Fest at Keehner Park. Features of the family friendly invite include a haunted trail, pony rides and petting zoo. Kids can also play and jump on inflatables and take horse and wagon rides. Beginning at 2 pm Madcap Puppets will have a show at the amphitheatre. The puppet show will be followed by a costume and a pumpkin decorating contest. This free event runs from 2 pm – 6 pm at 7411 Barrett Road West Chester, Ohio.

The Lebanon Mason and Monroe Railroad has their Pumpkin Patch Express running all weekend long. Trains depart from 1275 S. Mechanic Street Lebanon, Ohio at 9:45 am, 1 pm and 4:15 pm. The train ride takes you to Schappacher Farm in Mason, Ohio. Families can walk around the working farm, pet the barnyard animals and find their way through the corn maze. Before departing back to the train station, pick a small pumpkin to take home. Cost ranges from $8.50 – $18.50 depending on age. Allow up to 3 hours for the Pumpkin Patch Express experience.

Hidden Valley Fruit Farm is holding their Fall Family Fun Days. Get lost in the 7 acre corn maze, take a hayride to the pumpkin patch and visit with the barnyard animals. Older children can head to the green house for a scary maze through the Spook House. Family Fun Days also includes hayrides, train rides, a bounce house, playground and more. The farm, located at 5474 N US 48 Lebanon Ohio is open from 9 am – 7 pm this Saturday and Sunday. Cost varies depending on the activity.

The Lowry Team :: River Grill Before The Big Chill

Head down to Sawyer Point this weekend for The River Grill Before The Big Chill. The 2 day food and music festival is this Friday, October 10th and Saturday October 11th in downtown Cincinnati. Enjoy delicious BBQ, local brews and great music before the cold forces us all inside for the Winter!

The highlight of the event is, of course, the BBQ. The Kansas City Barbeque Society is holding a competition for both professionals and amateurs. The society’s certified judges will judge the professionals BBQ chicken, pork ribs, pork and beef brisket. Local celebrity judges will judge the “backyard” competition for amateurs.

It’s not a food and music festival without the music. On Friday from 5:30 pm- 8:30 pm DV8 performs on the P&G Stage and Leroy Ellington and the E-Funk Band play on Yeatman’s Cove Stage. From 8:30 pm -11 pm the Rusty Griswolds are on the P&G Stage and Soul Pocket plays on Yeatman’s Cove Stage.

A variety of different bands will be performing all day on Saturday. The highlight of the evening is Midnight Special from 7 pm – 9 pm followed by Starship featuring Mickey Thomas from 9:30 pm – 11 pm, both on the P&G Stage.

In addition to BBQ and bands you can peruse the market place for grill, BBQ supplies, sauces and spices. Entertain the kids at the Kids Zone, complete with circus performers, face painting, inflatables and kids games. Grab a bite to eat and a beer from local food and drink vendors.

River Grill Before The Big Chill is held from 5 pm – 11 pm on Friday and noon – 11 pm on Saturday. Tickets are $5 at the door. Kids 12 and under are free with a paying adult. Proceeds from the event benefit Cincinnati‘s waterfront parks.
