The Lowry Team Keller Williams Realty :: Design Your Own Patio
The Lowry Team was impressed by all of the beautiful outdoor living spaces at this year’s Homearama, located in Carriage Hill in Liberty Township. All of us thought about our own backyards and what we could do to improve them. Lisa Tesmer, Buyer Specialist for The Lowry Team recently added a patio to her backyard. A patio can be the perfect place to sit and relax with a book or to entertain family and friends. Lisa suggests that when you are considering building a patio, take into account the desired location, budget and how you plan to utilize the additional space.
Most people connect their patio to the rear of the house. Take a look around your home. You may want to create outdoor space on the side of the house or perhaps have a path leading to a patio further out in the yard. Lisa chose to add a patio to the rear of the house that connects to her pool. She also designed the patio to have a path that lead to the gate at the side yard for guests to travel on.
Envision how you see yourself using the patio. Do you see it as an extension of the house or a separate area? Is your style of entertaining small, intimate gatherings or do you like to throw large parties? This will help you to determine the style and size of the patio.
The cost of the project will be determined by the size and materials used. Unless it is a do it yourself project, there will be a charge for labor. Determine the size and layout of the patio and the types of material you would like it built with. Some options are concrete or brick pavers.
If within budget, what kind of extras would you like to add? Perhaps you would like a water feature, fireplace or a fire pit. Built in kitchens and bars are also very popular. You could choose to add a roof, pergola or screen in an area of the patio to protect you from the elements. Lisa added a nice sized fire pit to her patio. She thought it would be a nice touch to have the kids friends over to roast marshmallows and make s’mores.
The process of designing and building a patio can be a lot of fun. It can be as small and simple or as large and complex of an undertaking as you choose. Be sure to take into consideration how much you want to spend and what you want to use the patio for. Then, once completed – enjoy!
